Abstract

Russ Harris, one of the leading figures in the field of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), is recognized worldwide for his identity as a clinical psychologist and trainer, as well as for his books that have reached broad audiences. Harris’s book “The Reality Slap: How to Survive and Thrive When Life Hits Hard”, like his previous works, serves as a practical guide that brings the core principles of ACT into everyday life experiences. In this work, Harris explains coping processes with loss, trauma, and crises through the concept of the “reality gap,” while particularly emphasizing themes of self-compassion, values-based living, and mindfulness. Structured into five main sections, the book provides readers with both a theoretical framework and a roadmap for practical application through various exercises. Overall, the work can be regarded as an insightful resource not only for clinical practice but also for research in the social sciences on resilience, trauma, and well-being, owing to the perspective it develops on meaning-making, gratitude, and psychological flexibility.
