Abstract

Young people in Turkey are often positioned in media representations as objects that are defined, guided and assigned specific roles; however, particularly with the widespread adoption of digital tools, young people are breaking free from these stereotypes and striving to become active agents who construct their own narratives. Within this framework, the article examines the relationship between representation and subjectification in media programs where young people can speak directly, from a historical perspective. The study employs qualitative content analysis to examine the programs “Abbas Güçlü ile Genç Bakış”, broadcast on national television between 2002 and 2016, and “Mevzular Açık Mikrofon”, currently published on digital platforms. Their ability to reach a wide audience, participatory structures, and direct involvement of young people in the process make these programs a suitable basis for comparative analysis. The findings show that a comparison between the two programs reveals not only the differences between traditional and digital media, but also the historical transformations in the political climate, media structure, and the positioning of youth in the public sphere. While both programs tend to grant young people a voice, thereby making them visible as active political agents, this participation is constrained by editorial and discursive frameworks. Consequently, despite their participatory structures, the programs reproduce a paradoxical representation of young people; on screen, young people are portrayed on the one hand as subjects who demand accountability and make demands, and on the other as a group that needs to be monitored and guided.
