Abstract

The preservation of cultural heritage and the integration of creative industries into urban development strategies are of strategic importance for cities in today's global competitive environment. Established in 2004, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network promotes the sustainable development of cities through seven different themes: gastronomy, literature, music, design, crafts and folk art, film, and media arts. Turkiye is one of the countries actively represented in this network, boasting a rich cultural heritage and local dynamics. This study aims to examine how Turkiye's cities included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network are defined by UNESCO and which of their characteristics are highlighted. The research found that Gaziantep, Hatay, and Afyonkarahisar represent Turkiye in the field of gastronomy; Kütahya and Bursa in crafts and folk arts; Istanbul in design; Kırşehir and Şanlıurfa in music; and Kahramanmaraş in literature. Turkiye can nominate candidates from 72 cities not included in the network for the creative fields of film and media arts. For this to happen, it is necessary to identify the local cultural inventory and potential, ensure strategic planning and governance, organize a participatory and inclusive process, develop cultural infrastructure and capacity, carry out national and international visibility activities, prepare strong and sustainable application files, and provide policy and financial support.
