Abstract

Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) has become an increasingly important digital approach for the documentation, conservation, and management of cultural heritage. This study examines the scientific development, thematic structure, and emerging research trends of HBIM through a bibliometric analysis of publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection. The dataset was retrieved in January 2025 and comprised 399 publications covering the period from 2013 to January 2025. Bibliometric analyses were conducted to evaluate annual scientific production, leading countries and institutions, influential authors and sources, citation patterns, keyword relationships, thematic evolution, and trend topics. The findings indicate a substantial increase in HBIM research, particularly after 2019, with Italy, Spain, and China emerging as major contributors to the field. Laser scanning, photogrammetry, point clouds, BIM, and Scan-to-BIM remain central technological themes, while recent thematic developments indicate growing attention to semantic information management, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Twin approaches. Overall, the results demonstrate the transition of HBIM from a primarily documentation-oriented methodology toward a broader digital framework for cultural heritage information management. By mapping the scientific and technological evolution of HBIM, this study provides a structured overview of the field and identifies emerging directions for future research and professional heritage conservation practices.
