Abstract

Improving energy efficiency in buildings largely depends on accurately analyzing the parameters that determine heating and cooling energy requirements. In this context, the building envelope, which functions as a barrier between indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, directly affects total energy consumption and indoor thermal comfort through its orientation, geometry, and optical and thermophysical properties. With rising energy demand and sustainability goals, innovative materials that enable passive energy savings have gained increasing attention. Among these, phase change materials (PCMs) offer notable potential to enhance building thermal performance due to their ability to store and release latent heat as a function of ambient temperature. This study comparatively investigates, via simulations, the impacts of PCM-integrated wall systems on heating and cooling energy loads across five climatic regions of Türkiye represented by Antalya (Region 1), Istanbul (Region 2), Elazığ (Region 3), Erzurum (Region 4), and Kars (Region 5). Wall assemblies incorporating five PCM options with melting temperatures of 21°C, 23°C, 25°C, 27°C, and 29°C were evaluated, and their performance was assessed in terms of heating, cooling, and combined energy demand relative to a reference wall without PCM. The simulation results show that under the hot climatic conditions of Antalya, a PCM with a melting temperature of 29°C reduced the cooling load by 15%. For the temperate climate represented by Istanbul, the 29°C PCM achieved a 15% reduction in total energy demand, while in Elazığ the 25°C PCM provided an 18% reduction. In cold-climate regions where heating is dominant, namely Erzurum and Kars, the PCM with a melting temperature of 23°C decreased heating energy consumption by approximately 10%. Overall, the findings indicate that selecting PCM melting temperature in accordance with local climatic conditions can markedly improve overall wall-system energy performance and constitutes an effective design parameter for reaching targeted energy-saving levels across diverse climate zones.
