Abstract

Metro stations are public interiors where urban identity and cultural memory can become visible within everyday mobility. This study examines the spatial and design tools through which thematic interior design represents local identity and cultural memory. The research is structured as an applied qualitative single-case study supported by document analysis and comparative case analysis. Stockholm T-Bana, Montreal Metro, and Naples Art Stations are compared through four criteria: thematic source, spatial and design tools, planning and management model, and urban visibility and cultural contribution. Selected Istanbul stations provide the Turkish context. The 2012–2015 renovation of Bursa Şehreküstü Metro Station is then examined through project drawings, photographs, institutional correspondence, and design records. Findings indicate that thematic coherence is strengthened by continuity between locally grounded content, its distribution across multiple spatial components, and the early involvement of art and design actors. The Şehreküstü case demonstrates how this approach can be implemented through the renovation of an active transport facility. The study is limited to a single case and does not include an independent investigation of user perception or behavior.
