Abstract

The Safavid State, which ruled in Iran between the 16th and 18th centuries, offers an exceptional case among Turkish Islamic states in terms of cultural and artistic traditions. The architectural style prevalent in Iran until 1501-1870 is designated the 'Isfahan School'. Sheikh Lutfullah Mosque, which is located in the eastern section of Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan. The mosque was constructed by Mohammad Reza Isfahanî between 1603 and 1619, during the Shah Abbas period. The date 1603 and the name of the calligrapher Ali Reza Abbasi are inscribed on the portal, while the date 1616 is present on the dome and the name of the master Mohammad Reza Benna Isfahanî is displayed on the mihrab with the date 1618. The Sheikh Lutfullah Mosque is regarded as one of the most significant edifices in Safavid architectural history, particularly in its architectural plan and ornamentation. The mosque was designed in a central plan, comprising a square and domed harim and an 'L'-shaped corridor extending from the crown gate in the west to the harim entrance in the north. Of particular note is the ornamentation programme, which reveals the defining characteristics of Safavid architecture and distinguishes it from other periods. The Sheikh Lutfullah Mosque, considered a masterpiece of Safavid architecture, is unlike any mosque in Iran in its size and layout. The objective of the research is to introduce a significant structure from a lesser-known period of Turkish Art, whilst simultaneously revealing the characteristics of that particular period.
