Abstract

It is known that metal oil lamps found extensive usage compared to ceramic lamps due to their ability to emit more light. In this study, 12 metal Seljuk oil lamps from the 11th-12th centuries housed in the Van Museum are examined and evaluated within the context of their period. All of the lamps, made from bronze, were produced using casting techniques, with engraving and relief-embossing used as decoration techniques. Although they do not differ in terms of material, the lamps exhibit a rich variety in form typology and decorative features. The decorations on the bodies, shoulders, bases, and handles of the lamps include inscriptions, geometric and vegetal motifs, as well as animal figures that carry iconographic meanings. Since the samples in the study were brought to the museum through purchase -according to inventory records- the dating was made based on similar samples. It is noteworthy that the choice of motifs varies depending on the form in the metal lamps in the Van Museum. In addition, it has been determined that there is a close relationship between the material preferred in the examples and the construction technique. The oil lamps in the museum in question were dated to the Seljuk period by comparing them with similar examples. This study aims to introduce, analyze, and evaluate the Seljuk period metal oil lamps in the Van Museum from the perspective of the discipline of Art History, as these works have not yet been the subject of any scientific research.
