Abstract
This article examines approaches to music in modern Qurʾānic exegesis within the context of verse 6 of Sūrat Luqmān, which prohibits lahw al-ḥadīth (idle or vain discourse). The commentaries analyzed include those of Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır (d. 1942), Ömer Rıza Doğrul (d. 1952), Hasan Basri Çantay (d. 1964), Ömer Nasuhi Bilmen (d. 1971), Süleyman Ateş, the Qurʾān Yolu (Diyanet), Sayyid Quṭb (d. 1966), Abū al-Aʿlā al-Mawdūdī (d. 1979), Saʿīd Ḥawwā (d. 1989), Muṣṭafā al-Marāghī (d. 1952), and Ṭabāṭabāʾī (d. 1981). From these works, the exegetes’ views on the occasion of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl), the meaning of the expression lahw al-ḥadīth, its association with music, and their general evaluations of music have been identified. These findings have been assessed in light of information drawn from theses, articles, and encyclopedia entries on music and have led to a set of conclusions. According to the results, only al-Mawdūdī, in his interpretation of this verse, emphasizes the harms of music without addressing permissible forms of music. The majority of exegetes, however, maintain that the verse does not prohibit music per se, but rather condemns the use of music—or anything else—as a means of diverting people from the Qurʾān. When evaluated in light of reports on the occasion of revelation, narrations concerning music, sīra literature, and the opinions of jurists, the consistency of the majority view becomes evident.
Özet
Bu makalede boş sözü yasaklayan Lokmân Sûresi 6. âyet bağlamında yakın dönem tefsirlerinde müzik konusuna yaklaşımlar incelenmiştir. İncelenen tefsirler Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır (ö. 1942), Ömer Rıza Doğrul (ö. 1952), Hasan Basri Çantay (ö. 1964), Ömer Nasuhi Bilmen (ö. 1971), Süleyman Ateş, Diyanet Kur’ân Yolu, Seyyid Kutub (ö. 1966), Ebu’l-A’lâ el-Mevdûdî (ö. 1979), Saîd Havvâ (ö. 1989), Mustafa el-Merâğî (ö. 1952), Tabâtabâî (ö. 1981) tefsirleridir.
