Abstract

The seas, which have deeply influenced the history of mankind, have been one of the most important indicators of military, political and economic power through the sea power of states. The dominance of states in the seas has structured their security and trade motives and determined the direction of their national histories. In the literature, there are studies on the strategic effects of sea power in history and today. In this study, a valuable work that examines the choices of states to become “sea powers” from a political and cultural perspective will be analyzed. In the book, following an introductory discussion on the historical development of maritime trade, how it has shaped maritime power identity, and the relationship between the financing of maritime security and the dominance of maritime commerce, several historical cases are examined. These include how Athens constructed its maritime power, why the Roman Republic burned the Carthaginian Navy, the maritime power of Republic of Venice that could not be carried into the modern era, the influence of the Dutch Republic on the maritime power of the Republic, and the emergence of United Kingdom as the last great maritime power state. Furthermore, the maritime power of the United States Navy—reconstructed in line with the sea power theory of Alfred Thayer Mahan—is discussed in detail, along with the formation of NATO and the contemporary position of China in the global maritime order.
