Abstract
The principle of “speed and tempo” in offensive operations is generally understood to have been developed within the context of operational art and deep operations by Soviet military theorists such as Svechin and Triandafillov, and subsequently applied, particularly during the Second World War, by German, Soviet, and other Allied commanders. A shared characteristic of these conceptualizations is their reliance on mechanized elements, in other words tanks and armored vehicles, to generate speed and tempo. Conversely, historical examples exist, such as the Great Offensive of the Turkish War of Independence, demonstrating that infantry and cavalry units also successfully achieved speed and tempo. This study aims to compare the planned and actual movement times, alongside the rates of advance, by examining the time-terrain-culture dynamics of the Great Offensive, which occurred between August 26 and September 9, 1922. The analysis, modeled across four phases, the great offensive, the first pursuit, the pitched battle, and the great pursuit, is methodologically grounded in Dupuy’s unit rates of advance table and relative operational lethality calculations. Quantitative findings indicate that the Turkish army, maintaining an average daily rate of advance of 25 kilometers, achieved a time saving of 6 days and 19 hours throughout the operation. When findings of the “will-to-fight” qualitative analysis are incorporated into the calculations, it is evaluated that the total time saving reaches 31 days and 22 hours.
