Abstract

The American Revolutionary War, which took place between 1775 and 1783, has an importance for naval history research due to the strategy adopted, the tactics employed, and the technology used. This conclusion is based on the British maritime power, which allowed them to establish and maintain control over their American colonies. Therefore, the patriots realized that achieving strong naval control was essential for defeating England. However, their opponents were stronger, and the necessary infrastructure to build a fleet as large as theirs wasn't fully in place. That is why the most significant actors in the naval warfare of the American Revolutionary War were the privateers, who were granted freedom of operation by the separatists through the letters of marque. Privateers contributed to the patriot victory in the war through their reconnaissance, pilotage, intelligence, and commercial warfare activities. In addition, the separatists have formed volunteer naval militias to fight in coastal warfare. This study analyzes the role of privateers and naval militias in the American Revolutionary War and the formation of American naval strategy by using the Battle of Machias, which took place on June 11-12, 1775, as an example. On this occasion, the importance of commercial warfare in the establishment of maritime dominance is emphasized, and the impact of contract piracy on the current concept of “proxy warfare” is examined.
