Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationships between exercise identity, general self-efficacy, and psychological well-being in adults, and to determine whether these variables differ according to demographic characteristics. Conducted with a relational and cross-sectional survey design, the study was based on data collected online through convenience sampling. A total of 314 adults participated (208 women, 66.2%; 106 men, 33.8%; age ≥18). Participants completed the Exercise Identity Scale, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Psychological Well-Being Scale, and a Personal Information Form. Data were analyzed using SPSS 23, applying Pearson correlation tests, independent samples t-tests, and One-Way ANOVA. Findings indicated positive and significant relationships among exercise identity, general self-efficacy, and psychological well-being (p<0.01). No significant differences were found between women and men across the three variables (p>0.05). A low-level positive relationship was identified between age and the study variables (p<0.01). According to education level, high school graduates scored lower in general self-efficacy compared to other groups, while no significant differences were observed in exercise identity and psychological well-being (p>0.05). Regarding occupational groups, exercise identity differed between healthcare workers and private sector employees (p<0.05), while general self-efficacy was higher among the student/unemployed/other group compared to some other groups (p<0.05). No significant occupational differences were found in psychological well-being (p>0.05). Exercise frequency per week was positively and significantly associated with exercise identity, general self-efficacy, and psychological well-being (p<0.01). Analysis based on exercise session duration revealed significant differences between the low-duration group and the medium- and high-duration groups across all three variables, whereas no differences were observed between the medium- and high-duration groups (p<0.01). These findings highlight the importance of exercise identity in promoting both psychological well-being and self-efficacy, suggesting that regular physical activity can serve as a vital psychological resource.
