Abstract

This study critically examines Jeremy Bentham’s philosophy of education by focusing on the instrumental role he assigns to philosophy within the framework of utilitarian ethics. According to Bentham, education is not a path to inner development or a pursuit of truth, but rather a rational and disciplinary organization designed to maximize social utility. In this context, philosophy is no longer an abstract intellectual endeavour; it is transformed into a technical tool serving the production of measurable benefit. Bentham emphasizes that the function of education lies not in knowledge transmission, but in shaping behavioural patterns aligned with public welfare. Education does not aim to empower individuals, but to mold them into manageable and governable citizens. Metaphysical speculation, intuition, and inner truth are excluded from Benthamite pedagogy, which instead privileges utility, observation, empirical experience, and measurability. Based on the principle of panoptic surveillance, Bentham’s educational model positions the teacher not merely as a transmitter of knowledge but as a regulatory authority. Education becomes a form of behavioural engineering oriented toward calculable outcomes, rather than a space for ethical self-reflection. Contrary to Kantian and Rousseauian visions that prioritize autonomy and self-realization, Bentham’s model emphasizes the sustainability of the social system over individual interiority. This study analyses how Bentham instrumentalizes both philosophy and education, integrating them into a broader logic of governance rooted in utility and disciplinary control. His utilitarian perspective reveals the underlying political nature of modern education and invites a reconsideration of the relationship between the individual and society.
