Abstract

This study uses comparative close reading to examine how far Henri Bergson’s theory of laughter in Le rire (1900) accounts for comic effects in Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron . Within the sources that could be surveyed, there is no systematic analysis of the Calandrino tales that combines Bergson’s theory with Pirandello’s distinction in L’umorismo , and closely related studies remain few. Four Calandrino tales (VIII.3, VIII.6, IX.3, IX.5) and the Frate Cipolla tale (VI.10) are read through the shifting roles of the deceived and the deceiver within comic deception ( beffa ), understood as narrative positions rather than fixed traits. Bergson’s account of rigidity ( raideur ) explains Calandrino’s comic behavior particularly well. In a contemporary ethical reading, details of violence and humiliation may nevertheless redirect attention from the comic target to another harmed character. This does not invalidate Bergson’s thesis of emotional detachment. Pirandello’s distinction between the perception of the contrary ( avvertimento del contrario ) and the feeling of the contrary ( sentimento del contrario ) is of limited use in comparing laughter at Calandrino with attention to another character’s suffering. The study relates the adaptability of figures who devise or redirect comic deceptions to resourcefulness ( industria ) and related abilities valued in Boccaccio’s narrative. Such value does not imply full moral approval. Bergson thus explains much of the comedy examined. However, his theory does not separately address awareness of the harm suffered by one character while another is laughed at. Nor does it examine the narrative value attached to a figure’s skill in redirecting the deception.
