Abstract

Saadat Hasan Manto is recognized as one of the most prominent short story writers in Urdu literature. This study analyzes how Manto addresses crimes driven by social problems in three selected stories. A central theme in these narratives is that the primary impetus for theft is the drive to satisfy basic human needs. The analysis contends that crime cannot be attributed solely to individual morality; rather, it emerges from factors such as poverty, inadequate compensation for labor, and social inequality. In these stories, Manto depicts theft not as a manifestation of personal moral failure, but as a consequence of adverse living conditions and economic necessity. He shows that factors such as personal desire, economic compulsion, poverty, debt, the pursuit of rights, and broader societal circumstances can motivate theft. Accordingly, these acts reflect the interplay between individual behavior and social conditions. Theft, therefore, is conceptualized not merely as a legal category but as a phenomenon that requires reconsideration in relation to desire, need, rights, social norms, stigmatization, and identity.
