Abstract
Maxim Gorky’s novel Mother (Мать, 1906) has traditionally been regarded as a work of revolutionary propaganda composed in the aftermath of the 1905 Russian Revolution. Consequently, scholarly discussions have predominantly approached the novel through the perspectives of revolution, political propaganda, and socialist realism. More recent Russian scholarship, however, has demonstrated that Mother extends beyond an ideological narrative and should be understood as a multilayered work enriched by religious, philosophical, and mythological dimensions. At the same time, interpreting the novel from a religious perspective has given rise to criticism that Gorky sought to sacralize the revolutionary movement through the extensive use of biblical motifs. Against this background, the present study examines the biblical motifs in Mother with the aim of elucidating Gorky’s interpretation of the teachings of Jesus. It further seeks to broaden the scope of existing scholarship by moving beyond approaches that reduce the novel either to a vehicle of socialist propaganda or to an attempt to sanctify the revolutionaries. To this end, the biblical motifs embedded in the novel are analyzed through a comparative reading alongside relevant biblical texts, while the symbolic structure of the narrative is examined by means of discourse analysis. The findings demonstrate that biblical narratives and figures—including the Road to Emmaus, the Apostle Paul, the Virgin Mary, the Way of the Cross, Judas, and the Resurrection—constitute the symbolic framework of the novel. Through these motifs, Gorky constructs the spiritual and ideological transformation of Pavel Vlasov and Pelageya Nilovna in close dialogue with the Christian narrative tradition. Accordingly, the study argues that biblical motifs function not merely as literary ornaments but as fundamental structural and semantic components that shape the novel’s deeper meaning.
