Abstract

This study examines the social and political mechanisms through which the phenomenon of the Mafia is represented in Leonardo Sciascia’s Il giorno della civetta (The Day of the Owl). The main question is whether the Mafia is constructed in the novel merely as a criminal organization or as an alternative order-producing force in areas where state authority remains weak. Methodologically, the article employs close reading and sociological textual analysis, interpreting key narrative nodes alongside Diego Gambetta’s approach to the private protection industry and Gaetano Mosca’s conceptualization of the mafia spirit. The analysis focuses on the Bellodi-Don Mariano contrast, the Colasberna murder, and witness silence. The findings show that violence alone is not the determining element. The actual determinant is a system of social obedience operating through protection, reputation, fear, and omertà. Within this framework, omertà emerges not as an individual act of silence but as a collective social norm that disables the state-law relation. The article positions Sciascia’s mafia narrative not as a criminal case but as a critical social reading that renders visible the limits of the modern state. Its original contribution lies in applying Gambetta's protection-economy model and Mosca's mafia-spirit concept together within a single novel.
