Abstract

In economies experiencing inflationary pressures, a weakening in debt repayment capacity often leads to the inability to honor post-dated payment instruments such as checks and promissory notes at their maturity dates. This study aims to determine the causal relationship between the inflation rate and the total amount of dishonored checks and protested promissory notes in the Turkish economy by using monthly data for the period June 2021–August 2025. To this end, the relationship between the variables is analyzed through the Toda–Yamamoto (1995) causality test. The findings reveal a unidirectional Granger causality running from inflation to the total amount of dishonored checks and protested notes. This result indicates that increases in the general price level adversely affect the debt-payment behavior and financial obligations of economic agents. Conversely, no causal relationship is detected from dishonored checks and protested promissory notes to inflation. Overall, the study concludes that rising inflation undermines financial stability and the sustainability of commercial transactions, highlighting the critical importance of ensuring price stability for safeguarding economic confidence and the stability of payment systems.

Özet

Enflasyonist süreçlerin yaşandığı ekonomilerde, borç ödeme kabiliyetinin zayıflamasıyla birlikte ileri tarihli ödeme araçları olan çek ve senetlerin vade tarihlerinde ödenememesi sıkça karşılaşılan bir durumdur. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye ekonomisi için Haziran 2021–Ağustos 2025 dönemine ait aylık veriler kullanılarak, enflasyon oranı ile karşılıksız çek ve protestolu senet toplamı arasındaki nedensellik ilişkisinin tespit edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, değişkenler arasındaki ilişki Toda–Yamamoto (1995) nedensellik testi aracılığıyla analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucunda, enflasyondan karşılıksız çek ve protestolu senet toplamına doğru tek yönlü bir Granger nedensellik ilişkisi tespit edilmiştir. Bu bulgu, fiyatlar genel düzeyindeki artışların ekonomik birimlerin borç ödeme davranışlarını ve finansal yükümlülüklerini olumsuz etkilediğini göstermektedir. Buna karşın, karşılıksız çek ve protestolu senetlerden enflasyona doğru herhangi bir nedensellik ilişkisi saptanmamıştır. Sonuç olarak, enflasyondaki artışların finansal istikrarı ve ticari işlemlerin sürdürülebilirliğini olumsuz yönde etkilediği, bu nedenle fiyat istikrarının sağlanmasının ekonomik güvenin ve ödeme sistemlerinin istikrarının korunması açısından kritik önem taşıdığı belirlenmiştir.
