Abstract

This study empirically examines the determinants of profitability performance in privately owned deposit banks operating in Türkiye. Using monthly data covering the period from January 2003 to May 2025, the analysis focuses on two profitability indicators: return on equity (ROE) and net interest margin (NIM). The models include non-interest income, capital adequacy, balance sheet structure, deposits, and labor cost intensity as explanatory variables, and the short- and long-run relationships among the variables are estimated through the ARDL bounds testing approach. In addition, structural breaks identified by the Zivot-Andrews test are incorporated into the models through dummy variables. The findings indicate that non-interest income has a positive and statistically significant effect on both ROE and NIM in the short and long run. The results also show that labor cost intensity exerts downward pressure on both profitability indicators, while deposit volume negatively affects the net interest margin; whereas a credit-oriented balance sheet structure supports NIM. Overall, the findings suggest that privately owned deposit banks should strengthen and diversify their non-interest income sources, manage funding costs effectively, and improve operational efficiency in order to sustain profitability performance over the long term.
