Abstract

This study empirically examines the financial and structural factors associated with the profitability dynamics of state-owned banks operating in the Turkish banking sector after the restructuring process following the 2001 banking crisis. Using monthly data for the period 2003:1–2025:5, three separate ARDL models are estimated for return on assets, return on equity, and net interest margin. The findings indicate that non-interest income is positively associated with all profitability indicators. The balance sheet structure variable, representing credit intensity, is positively associated particularly with return on equity and net interest margin. In contrast, the operational cost composition variable, measured as the share of personnel expenses in operating expenses, is negatively associated with return on equity and net interest margin. The relationship between deposit size and profitability differs across models, while no statistically significant relationship is detected for the capital adequacy variable. Overall, the results show that the profitability dynamics of state-owned banks are closely related to income diversification, asset composition, and operational cost structure. In this respect, the study contributes to understanding the profitability dynamics of state-owned banks.
