Abstract

The aim of this study is to empirically examine the relationship between corruption and human development in a sample of developing countries. While human development is considered a multidimensional indicator of development encompassing education, health, and income dimensions that reflect individuals’ quality of life, corruption is regarded as a structural problem that weakens the effective use of public resources and adversely affects the quality of governance. In this study, the relationship between corruption and human development is examined using a panel data set covering the period 1996–2024 for 46 developing countries. The empirical findings indicate that, for the selected period and country group, there is no strong and direct causal relationship between corruption and human development. This result shows that the effects of corruption on human development tend to operate not through short-term and direct mechanisms, but rather through indirect and long-term channels. The study highlights that efforts to combat corruption should be considered together with comprehensive development policies aimed at promoting human development.
