Abstract

One of the practical courses offered in interior design education is the furniture course. The aim of this course is to enable students to establish a direct relationship with design, material knowledge, production techniques, and workshop operations. However, high-risk machines such as band saws and circular saws used in these processes pose serious hazards in terms of occupational health and safety. The aim of this study is to examine the use of virtual reality (VR) technology in the teaching process of high-risk furniture materials used in the furniture course within interior design education in the context of occupational health, safety, and ergonomics. The study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Quantitative data were collected to determine students' technology literacy levels, while qualitative data were obtained through interviews with students and academics. In addition, visuals reflecting students' predictions regarding VR-supported machine use were produced. The findings show that VR technology provides a safe learning environment, increases risk awareness, and supports learning motivation. Consequently, it was concluded that VR-supported applications are an important tool that strengthens occupational health and safety education in furniture courses.
