Abstract

This study examined cotton waste known as “cotton mill filter dust”, a by-product of yarn production, as a filler in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites, and compared it with red pine wood flour as a control filler. The aim was to turn a textile waste that cannot be reused in spinning into a usable composite material. The waste was tested in washed and untreated forms, at four particle sizes (20, 40, 60 and 80 mesh) and four loading ratios (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%). Composite sheets were produced by hot pressing, and their tensile (ASTM D638), flexural (ASTM D790), impact (ASTM D256), density (dimensional/geometric method) and water absorption (ASTM D7031-11) properties were measured. The data were analysed by one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD test. Neat HDPE had a tensile strength of 21.63 MPa, a flexural strength of 33.44 MPa and an impact strength of 20.21 J/m, and these values generally decreased as the filler ratio rose. Washing the waste, however, raised the elasticity modulus and gave a stiffer composite; the flexural modulus of the 40% washed sample reached 1617 MPa. Overall, washed cotton waste in the 20–40 mesh range exhibited optimal mechanical properties; this indicates that pretreated textile waste of this size can be used to produce composites suitable for industrial applications.
