Abstract
This study examines, through a systematic perspective, the ways Sefil Selimî—one of the contemporary representatives of Turkish folk literature—constructs Sufi thought and imagery in his poems. The main aim of the research is to reveal how Sufi teachings transmitted from generation to generation within the tradition of folk minstrelsy are interpreted by Selimî, and through which forms of diction, style, and expressive means these teachings are conveyed to today’s readers. In this respect, the study evaluates together both Selimî’s use of Sufi concepts and the function of the images through which these concepts are made concrete. It thus seeks to make visible how traditional spiritual wisdom is retold in contemporary folk poetry and with what values and orientations it is communicated to the reader. The research is designed descriptively within a qualitative framework. Document analysis and text-centered close reading are employed together, and an interdisciplinary method is followed by relating literary analysis to Sufi terminology. The dataset is supported by primary documents, testimonies, and biographical narratives concerning the poet’s life story and literary personality. All published poems have been surveyed, especially those in Yalınkat and Kul Yanmasın, and the compilation and evaluative studies prepared by Doğan Kaya, Uğur Kaya, and Alim Yıldız have also been included in the analysis. Thanks to these sources, both the integrity of the texts is preserved and the cultural environment and meaning-world in which the poems emerged is established. In the analysis process, Sufi concepts and images in the poems were first identified and then classified according to concept clusters such as tawḥīd, waḥdat al-wujūd, discipline of the nafs, dhikr, the “four gates and forty stations,” sayr u sulūk, divine love, the heart and the soul, the guide (murshid) and the pir, and the ideal of the perfected human (insān al-kāmil). For each concept, the contexts in which it appears, the words and similes through which it becomes visible, and the associations it evokes in the reader were interpreted through representative verses. For this purpose, the poems titled “Kim,” “Ben-Sen,” “Günah mı,” “Can Pınarından,” “Kul Yanmasın,” “Ezel,” “Meydan Var Meydan,” “Kevser Irmağı,” “Gül Getirdim Sizlere,” and “Bir Muhammed” were selected as key texts for close analysis. The findings indicate that Selimî successfully blends the classical Sufi heritage with the expressive possibilities of Turkish folk poetry. A strong sense of unity is felt in the poems, and around this idea the believer’s inner journey is narrated in a meaningful way. The gathering of existence in God, the purification of the self, overcoming the tension between “I” and “You,” self-questioning, and the turn toward truth stand out as determining themes in many texts. Struggle with the nafs, patience and surrender, the life-giving effect of dhikr, the stages of sayr u sulūk, the burning experience of divine love, the cleansing of the heart and the soul, the spiritual guidance of the murshid, and the ideal of the mature human being shape the thematic framework of the poems. Rather than listing these themes in a dry, didactic manner, Selimî prefers to carry emotion and thought together through symbols familiar to the people’s everyday culture. The imagery develops a signifying mode of expression that moves from outward meaning toward inward meaning. While the rose represents love and the horizon that opens onto unity, the nūr Muḥammadī alludes to the light of love for the Prophet and the manifestation of truth. Wine and the cupbearer (sāqī) are used to describe spiritual grace, a state of ecstasy, and mystical intoxication. The road and the station express the phases of sayr u sulūk. The meydan evokes testing and the experience of being within a community of saints. The sea and the Kawthar convey both the orientation toward the divine source and the idea of mercy. Fire and burning signify the dissolution and purification of the self. The heart and the soul represent the locus of maʿrifa, that is, the inner domain where truth is apprehended. Sefil Selimî reinterprets Sufi concepts through images compatible with the people’s cultural memory, building an intelligible, sincere, and powerful language without disrupting the integrity of tradition. This synthesis is important insofar as it shows how Turkish Sufi literature continues to function today as a living heritage.
