Abstract
In terms of sound and harmony, redif holds significant importance in poetry, while in terms of meaning it establishes the connection between couplets and strengthens expression. In classical Turkish poetry, redif serves as the complement and enrichment of rhyme. Within the tradition to which they belong, poets encountered many ready-made formulas and thus inherited a remarkably rich legacy regarding redif. In our study, more than three hundred divans and mecmuas composed between the 14th and 20th centuries were examined, and it was determined that the earliest example of the redif in question appeared in the 17th century, being employed in a total of fourteen ghazals. The identified redifs are as follows: “[-den] sonra, ammâ neden sonra, bilür ammâ neden sonra.” Among the extant ghazals, nine poets (Fehîm-i Kadîm, İshak-zâde Zuhûrî, Mezâkī, Şûhî Bengî-zâde, Vecîhî, Beylikçi İzzet Bey, Kânî, Kâtib-zâde Sâkıb, Mirzâ-zâde Mehmed Sâlim) employed the redif in the form “[-den] sonra”; four poets (Ahmed Nâmî, Âşık Ömer, Hafız Mehmet Tahir Efendi, Benderli Cesârî) used it in the form “ammâ neden sonra”; and one poet (Feyzî Efendi) employed the form “bilür ammâ neden sonra.” The aim of this study is to reveal to what extent poets who employed the same redif influenced or were influenced by one another in terms of form and content. The ghazals identified were analyzed in terms of both structure and meaning, and inferences were drawn from the couplets concerning situations such as lamentation, longing, or the perception that time has passed, within the framework of the classical Turkish poetic tradition. Furthermore, in order to better understand the poets’ states of mind and to discern the reasons for happiness unattained in its proper time, the poems were evaluated within the lover–servant (âşık/kul) relationship. The study also presents, in tabular form, the bibliographic information and opening couplets (matla beyitleri) of the identified ghazals. Methodologically, the research was conducted as a text-centered study based on redif.
