Abstract

The literary and mythopoetic construction of imperial ideology in Augustan Rome is the focus of this article, which analyzes Virgil's Aeneid. Its fundamental inquiry pertains to the Aeneid's contribution to the development of political legitimacy, collective memory, and Roman imperial self-awareness. The article views the poem as a complex epic text in which ideological affirmation and tragic tension coexist, rather than as a simple instrument of Augustan propaganda. The investigation employs a methodology that integrates historical-contextual analysis with close reading. It concentrates on the development of Aeneid as a political and moral figure that is influenced by pietas, duty, sacrifice, and destiny. It also examines significant events, including Anchises' underworld speech, the shield of Aeneid, the Dido narrative, and the murder of Turnus. The primary argument is that the Aeneid does not merely reflect Augustan imperial ideology; it actively contributes to its development by connecting Roman power to mythical origins, historical destiny, and an exemplary model of ethical subjecthood. However, the poem also exposes the violence, exclusions, and losses that are the foundation of this imperial order. In this regard, the Aeneid should not be interpreted as a univocal ideological apparatus, but rather as a foundational literary text that illustrates the conflict between legitimacy and tragedy that is at the core of the Roman imperial imagination.
