Abstract

Throughout history, the Turks established many successive states. One of these was the Ghaznavid Empire, which was founded in the 10th century and ruled over Khorasan, Afghanistan, and northern India. The Ghaznavids, one of the first Muslim Turkish states, made jihad and holy war a tradition from the moment of their founding, passing this responsibility down from generation to generation among their rulers. In line with this mission, the Ghaznavid rulers who ascended the throne organized significant campaigns to India. Especially during the reign of Sultan Mahmud, the Ghaznavids expanded their rule into the interior of India and turned it into the second center of their state. When Sultan Ibrahim, who distinguished himself through his abilities amid the turmoil following Sultan Masud, ascended the throne, the campaigns in India had been interrupted due to the ongoing war with the Seljuks. The current environment mentioned above initially led him to focus on consolidating central authority. Sultan Ibrahim then turned his attention to India, personally leading most of the aforementioned campaigns. In some cases, he appointed his son Seyfü’d-Devle Mahmûd to lead them. While the Sultan's primary goal was jihad and holy war, he also sought to capture strategically important castles. Among these, the campaign for Tabarhind Castle, whose name means “Border of India,” the religiously significant Ujjain Castle for Hindus, and the fortified Agra Castle stand out. This study will focus on the strategically important castles captured during the campaigns to India during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim.

Sonrasında yönünü Hindistan’a çeviren Sultan İbrahim, söz konusu gazâların çoğunu bizzat kendisi yürüttü. Bazılarında ise oğlu Seyfü’d-Devle Mahmûd’u memur etti. Sultan’ın başlıca emeli gaza ve cihat olmakla birlikte, aynı zamanda stratejik açıdan önemli kaleleri ele geçirmekti. Bunlar arasında, ismi ‘‘Hindistan’ın Sınırı’’ anlamına gelen Tabarhind Kalesi, Hindular açısından dinî olarak önemli Ujjain Kalesi ve müstahkem Agra Kalesi seferi, ön plana çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, Sultan İbrahim döneminde Hindistan’a düzenlenen seferlerde ele geçirilen stratejik açıdan önemli kaleler üzerinde durulacaktır.
