Abstract
This study re-evaluates the contentious issue of Avar origins in Eurasian history through the comparative analysis and textual criticism of Byzantine chronicles (e.g., Menander, Simocatta, John Malalas and Zacharias Rhetor, John of Ephesus, Theophanes Confessor). The research refutes the Hephthalite thesis prevalent in Turkish historiography on the grounds of chronological impossibility. Furthermore, it reveals that Simocatta’s “Pseudo-Avar” narrative was a political structure based on the propaganda of the Gokturks. In light of the sources, it has been established that the Avars reached Caucass nearly 555-557, whereas the collapse of the Hephthalites occurred subsequent to this date. According to the synthesis presented in this study, the European Avar Khaganate was constituted by a ruling elite from the Rouran Khaganate who, during their westward migration, subjugated the War, Chunni, and Ogur masses residing in the Caucasus and its vicinity. By dismantling the “Pseudo-Avar” myth, this study repositions the Avars not as “fugitive slaves”, but as a Rouran-centered political organism whose legitimacy was grounded in steppe tradition.
