Abstract

This study monitors the spatiotemporal trends of atmospheric greenhouse gases and pollutants (CH4, CO, NO2, O3, SO2) in Diyarbakır Province, Turkey, and examines their impacts on urban Land Surface Temperature (LST) over a 7-year period (2019–2025). Utilizing a descriptive, observational, and quantitative research design, Sentinel-5P TROPOMI data for atmospheric compositions and MODIS data for LST were processed via the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Methodologically, pixel-based linear trend analysis, spatial hotspot mapping, time-series analysis, and Pearson correlation matrices were applied. The results revealed a strong increasing trend in CH4 emissions (slope: 0.007027), particularly concentrated in agricultural and waste disposal areas, whereas CO levels exhibited a significant decrease (slope: -0.001586). Furthermore, summer LST frequently exceeded 50°C, markedly intensifying the urban heat island effect. A notable negative correlation (-0.47) was identified between NO2 and O3. These findings indicate that rising methane emissions from agricultural and waste sources are driving urban warming and secondary pollutant (O3) formation. In conclusion, this study underscores the critical need for continuous satellite monitoring and integrated environmental policies targeting both traditional pollutants and agricultural methane to mitigate escalating public health risks and climate impacts in regional urban centers.
