Abstract

Digitalization is increasingly shifting consumers’ pre-purchase information search online; yet whether the search traces left by this behavior lead market demand—and when this relationship emerges—remains largely unexamined in emerging markets. This study addresses this gap in the Turkish automotive market, focusing on temporal stability. Using monthly data for 2015–2025, Google Trends search interest, representing the information-search stage, is related to automobile and light commercial vehicle sales, controlling for the exchange rate and consumer and vehicle loan interest rates. After seasonal adjustment, conditional Granger causality, sub-period stability analyses, and out-of-sample forecasting are conducted. Search interest leads sales unidirectionally and significantly, even after controlling for macroeconomic and financing variables. However, this leading power is entirely specific to the post-2020 period and is absent before the pandemic, while the forecasting contribution of search is conditional. In doing so, the study offers novel empirical evidence for emerging markets that the leading power of online consumer search over demand has emerged together with digitalization.
