Abstract

This research note examines a Maqāmāt manuscript, one of 584 manuscripts sold to the Austrian National Library by the Orientalist Oskar Rescher. This copy of Maqāmāt al-Ḥarīrī, written in Arabic, which appears to have escaped scholarly attention until now, is the third earliest extant manuscript according to available data. It is also significant because it was copied from the earliest dated manuscript corrected by the author himself. After briefly addressing Rescher’s involvement in the manuscript trade and his interest in the maqama genre, this research note attempts to document the history and provenance of the manuscript by analyzing the records contained therein. Thus, the aim is to contribute to the consideration of this distinguished Maqāmāt manuscript in future studies.
