Abstract

This study examines Annemarie Schimmel’s Islamic Names, translated into Turkish by Mehmet Emin Alp as Müslüman Toplumlarda İsim Kültürü, and evaluates the way the book treats naming culture, its central theme, in its historical, sociological, and linguistic dimensions. Schimmel’s work covers a broad span of time and geography, extending from the naming traditions of Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and the languages of other Muslim societies to the surname policies of the modern period. The aim of the present study is to show how Schimmel interprets the relationship that names establish with social structure, religious symbolism, identity construction, and cultural memory, and to discuss the book’s method, its use of examples, its principal findings, and its potential contribution. A qualitative method based on the analysis of subject, content, and argument is adopted. The examination finds that Schimmel treats names as an element of cultural structure and that this constitutes the strongest aspect of the work. Despite certain passages that contain broad geographical generalizations, Islamic Names, when assessed within the resources and the scholarly accumulation of its own period, proves to be a comprehensive study by virtue of its extensive content, its notable examples, and its illuminating approach. It is therefore concluded that the book is a valuable reference work, since it reveals the motives behind naming practices and their historical transformations and makes it possible to trace the name-identity relationship in Muslim societies. At the same time, it is observed that in practice the book gives greater weight to India, Iran, and Turkey, while offering only limited information on the naming cultures of regions such as Malaysia, Sudan, and Sub-Saharan Africa. It is further noted that the author’s more comprehensive German study on names in the Islamic world, Von Ali bis Zahra, has been overlooked.
