Abstract

Using artificial neural network methods, this study compares the factors affecting the mathematical literacy of 15-year-old students in Turkey, Croatia, and Greece using PISA 2018 data. Adopting a quantitative research approach and a descriptive survey design, the study created a working group of 16,506 students from student data sets published by the OECD. Thirteen variables were determined as predictors: gender, parental education level, socioeconomic status, learning duration, and reading motivation. Mathematics achievement level was analyzed by classifying it into two subgroups. The artificial neural network model was run using the SPSS 25.00 program, and the importance ranking of the variables and the accuracy rate of the model were determined for each country. The findings show that the socioeconomic and cultural status variable is the strongest predictor in all countries. In Turkey and Croatia, learning duration and father's education level are more decisive, whereas in Greece, individual and affective factors are more influential. Furthermore, it was observed that the classification accuracy varies according to the number of subgroups. The research highlights the multi-layered nature of student achievement and offers recommendations for the data-driven development of educational policies.
