Abstract

The Çayağzı Archaeological Site and its immediate surroundings, located in the Demre district of Antalya Province, constitute an important coastal area due to their natural coastal landscape and archaeological heritage value. This study aims to develop a conceptual approach for the landscape design project at the Demre Çayağzı Archaeological Site within the framework of a balance between conservation and use. As part of the study, the natural features (topography, coastal characteristics, vegetation, and ecological characteristics), cultural features (archaeological heritage, historic environment, and current land uses), and spatial characteristics of the project area were analyzed using field surveys, relevant plans, conservation decisions, and institutional data. The data obtained were evaluated using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based spatial analyses and translated into design decisions in accordance with an analysis-synthesis approach. During the design process, the preservation of natural and cultural identity, transportation and accessibility, recreational opportunities, spatial sustainability, landscape quality and user comfort, safety, and socioeconomic sustainability were considered as key evaluation criteria. Assessments of the current situation have identified irregularities in pedestrian and vehicular traffic, a lack of recreational areas and public amenities, functional issues in coastal use, and the failure to holistically address natural and cultural values within the spatial framework as the primary problems. Conversely, the area’s natural coastal landscape, its historical connection to Andriake Harbor, and its recreational and tourism potential have been identified as significant design opportunities. Accordingly, a design approach has been developed that supports controlled use, relies on low-impact interventions, and aims to improve visitor circulation and the quality of public spaces. This study presents a practical example of how analytical data can be translated into landscape design decisions in a sensitive coastal area subject to multiple conservation measures. This study examines a multi-layered landscape design process that begins with an analysis of the existing natural and spatial characteristics of the coastal area along the Çayağzı River in the Demre district of Antalya Province and concludes with the evaluation of this data in accordance with design criteria. Because the project area and its immediate surroundings lie at the intersection of five different legally protected areas, they constitute a highly sensitive threshold from both ecological and archaeological perspectives. The design proposals developed in light of this spatial sensitivity are based on a holistic approach to marine and land transportation systems, the enhancement of recreational and public use opportunities, and the preservation of local ecological values. Accordingly, the goal is to analyze the region’s natural and cultural landscape characteristics within the framework of sustainability principles and to incorporate the resulting synthesis into strategic spatial design decisions. Within the scope of this study, components of landscape morphology—such as the preservation of natural and cultural character, accessibility, spatial sustainability, recreational opportunities, landscape quality and comfort, safety, and socio-economic factors—have been accepted as fundamental design inputs. This conceptual approach, which balances the constraints imposed by legal protection statuses and regulations with the public interest, aims to preserve the area’s natural and historical-cultural identity, restore the area functionally, aesthetically, and ecologically, meet visitors’ basic needs, ensure the area’s quality and controlled use, the continuity of the coastal ecosystem and the integrity of the landscape, improved accessibility, and the enhancement of the site’s local identity.
