Abstract

To prevent nutritional deficiencies, nutrition can be administered enterally or parenterally, depending on the patient's medical condition and needs. Enteral tube feeding can be administered through a nasogastric or gastrostomy tube. Enteral tube feeding may carry some risks for the patient. In patients with enteral feeding tubes, nutritional assessment is crucial for proper nutrition management. Gastric residual volume is used to assess feeding tolerance. International guidelines consider the gastric residual volume limit to be 250-500 ml. Many factors influence gastric residual volume. Several active methods are used to assess gastric residual volume. These methods include imaging and ultrasound. Nursing care is essential for patients with enteral feeding tubes. Nurses guide patients and families in the correct selection of enteral feeding products and equipment, the creation of an appropriate feeding plan, and ensuring compliance. The education provided by nurses to caregivers regarding common complications is particularly important. This training should address feeding tube care, feed preparation and administration, tube obstruction, and residual gastric content measurement. International guidelines, based on strong consensus, do not recommend routine gastric residual volume monitoring in critically ill patients. The purpose of this article is to emphasize the importance of residual gastric content monitoring and nursing care in patients receiving enteral feeding tube feeding.
