Abstract
To investigate how the first birth experiences of Generation Y women who gave birth in the last year and Generation X women over the age of 50 affect their perceptions of traumatic birth and the factors that affect them. The research was conducted in the Kütahya provincial center between November 1, 2019, and January 31, 2020. The study population consisted of Generation Y women who had given birth within the past year and Generation X women over the age of 50. Data were collected from a total of 714 individuals: 339 from Generation Y and 375 from Generation X. Participants completed the Traumatic Birth Perception Scale (PTS) and a Personal Information Form. The average age of Generation Y women who participated in our study was 28.86±4.92; the average age of Generation X women was 57.93±7.49. For Generation Y women, the vaginal birth rate was 49.6%, the home birth rate was 0.9%, and the rate of births attended by a doctor was 64.8%; for Generation X women, the vaginal birth rate was 92%, the home birth rate was 31.7%, and 51.7% of their births were attended by midwives and 27.7% by village midwives. The TPAS score of Generation Y women was 64.57 (medium); and the TPAS score of Generation X women was 41.79 (low) (p<0.05). The Cronbach's alpha value of the TPAS in our study was found to be 0.905. Generation Y women who gave birth within the last year had higher perceptions of traumatic birth than Generation X women over the age of 50 (p<0.05).
