Abstract

This study examines the mechanics of the collapse of democratic regimes and the processes of authoritarianism in the 21st century, based on Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt's book How Democracies Die. The study centers on the thesis that modern democracies are no longer destroyed by military coups, but rather by democratically elected autocrats and from within. In this context, the loss of the gatekeeping function of political parties in the United States and the Grand Concession process demonstrated by the Republican Party, which was unable to prevent Donald Trump's rise, are analyzed from a historical perspective. The book emphasizes that constitutional texts alone are not sufficient to protect democracy; it discusses the erosion of unwritten democratic norms such as mutual tolerance and institutional self-restraint, which are the true guardians of the system. Furthermore, through a comparative analysis using the examples of Turkey, Venezuela, and Peru, it reveals how the judiciary, media, and business world are instrumentalized by political powers and how checks and balances are rendered ineffective. Ultimately, the study draws attention to the destructive effects of increasing political polarization on democracy and argues for the necessity of broad-based coalitions for democratic renewal.
