Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to reveal the effect of guidance support given to high risk babies regarding physiotherapy and rehabilitation practices from an early age on the emotional state of mothers. Methods: The study included mothers of infants with corrected ages between 0 and 12 months who were discharged after receiving care in the neonatal intensive care unit and who were at risk for neurodevelopmental disorders. Immediately after the infants were discharged, their developmental status was assessed, and the home program was explained in detail. The mothers' emotional state was assessed using the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale. The mothers included in the assessment were divided into two groups. The mothers in one group were contacted every other day by phone/video call by the physiotherapists in the study team, who provided guidance on the home exercises using this method. No phone/video call contact was made with the mothers in the control group. All mothers and their infants were reassessed one month later. Results: The depression scale results of mothers in the guidance group (n=17) and the control group (n=15) were compared at the beginning and end of the one-month follow-up. While the pre-follow-up results of the groups were similar, a statistically significant difference was observed between the post-follow-up results (p=0.02). In the control group, the change after treatment was not significant compared to before treatment (p=0.27), while in the guidance group, the results after follow-up showed a statistically significant improvement compared to before follow-up (p=0.01). Conclusion: Early physical therapy and rehabilitation guidance for high-risk infants positively affects mothers' emotional state. These results demonstrate that professional support provided to families in the early stages is important not only for the development of infants but also for the mental health of mothers.
