Abstract

Purpose: In the neonatal intensive care unit, infants experience stress due to various factors, including bright light, loud noises, and medical interventions. To investigate the effect of infant massage applied in the intensive care unit on stress hormones and growth in premature infants. Methods: The study involved fourteen premature infants in 28-34 gestational weeks, weighing over 1000 grams, and in stable clinical conditions. They were randomly divided into two groups. The control group received routine care processes, while the massage group received 32 sessions of infant massage over 4 weeks. The babies' stress levels were assessed at the beginning and end of the 4-week period by measuring cortisol levels in their blood. Measurements were also taken for body weight, head circumference, and height. The evaluations were conducted by an unbiased researcher. Results: The amount of increase in head circumference, body weight and length parameters was found to be higher in the massage group than in the control group (p<0.05). When the massage group was compared within itself, it was found that massage significantly decreased serum cortisol levels (p=0.018). The decrease in serum cortisol level in the massage group was significantly higher than in the control group (p=0.026). Cortisol values of the infants in the massage group were found to be 16.29 ± 6.72 µg/dL before treatment and 7.49 ± 3.97 µg/dL after treatment (p=0.053). Conclusion: Infant massage was found effective in reducing stress hormones and promoting growth in premature babies followed up in the neonatal intensive care unit.
