Abstract

Background: Refugees often experience difficulties adapting to sustainable and healthy dietary patterns in host countries and constitute a population particularly vulnerable to food insecurity. Aim: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of food insecurity among refugee adults living in Kayseri and to examine its association with sustainable and healthy eating behaviors. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2024 and February 2025 with 325 refugee adults residing in Kayseri. Data were collected via an online questionnaire. Food insecurity was assessed using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale, and sustainable and healthy eating behaviors were evaluated using the Sustainable and Healthy Eating Behaviors Scale. Results: Food insecurity was prevalent in 92.3% of participants, with 55.1% experiencing moderate and 12.6% severe food insecurity. Participants with moderate-to-severe food insecurity had significantly lower scores in healthy and balanced diet, consumption of local and seasonal foods, preference for quality labels, sensitivity to animal welfare, preference for low-fat foods, and avoidance of food waste compared with those who were food secure or mildly food insecure (p<0.05). Conclusion: Food insecurity is strongly associated with poorer sustainable and healthy eating behaviors among refugee adults. Interventions promoting accessible and culturally appropriate dietary practices are needed to improve diet quality and may contribute to reducing food insecurity in this population.

Bulgular: Katılımcıların %92.3’ünde besin güvencesizliği saptanmış olup, %55.1’i orta, %12.6’sı şiddetli düzeyde besin güvencesizliği yaşamaktadır. Orta ve şiddetli besin güvencesizliği yaşayan bireylerin; sağlıklı ve dengeli beslenme, yerel ve mevsimsel gıda tüketimi, kalite işaretlerine yönelim, hayvan sağlığına duyarlılık, düşük yağlı besin tercihi ve gıda israfından kaçınma alt boyut puanları, besin güvencesi sağlanmış ve hafif derecede besin güvencesizliği yaşayan bireylere kıyasla anlamlı düzeyde daha düşük bulunmuştur (p<0.05). Sonuç: Besin güvencesizliği, mülteci yetişkinlerde sürdürülebilir ve sağlıklı beslenme davranışlarının zayıflaması ile ilişkili bulunmuştur. Bulgular, mülteci nüfusta besin güvencesizliğini azaltmaya yönelik sürdürülebilir, kültürel açıdan uygun ve ekonomik erişilebilirlik temelli beslenme davranışlarının yaygınlaşması gerekliliğini ortaya koymaktadır.
