Abstract

This study presents the findings on women's representation obtained from a field research project supported by the Bursa Uludağ University Scientific Research Projects Unit (BAP), conducted over a period of 24 days in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia in September 2025. During the fieldwork, audio and video recordings were collected on folk music repertoires, religious musical practices, women's music collectives, individual and domestic music practices, children's songs, lullabies, and laments. In addition, local archives, visual materials, and oral history narratives were examined. The article examines women's roles in musical production, transmission, and representation through two complementary contexts: women's music collectives operating in the public sphere and domestic music practices maintained within family and kinship networks. These contexts are discussed as canonical and semi-canonical structures in relation to the formation and transmission of the musical canon and are interpreted through Victor Turner's concepts of liminality and communitas. The findings demonstrate that Gagauz women play a central role in preserving and transmitting traditional musical culture and in the reproduction of collective cultural memory.
