Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between social media addiction and psychological well-being levels among midwifery students. Method: The study was conducted with 258 participants studying at the Department of Midwifery, Faculty of Health Sciences, XXX University. No sample selection was made in the study, and the aim was to reach the entire research population. Data were collected online through a survey form consisting of a Personal Information Form, the Social Media Addiction Scale, and the Psychological Well-Being Scale. Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the XXX University Social and Human Sciences Ethics Committee with decision number 65 dated April 14, 2025. Pearson Correlation Analysis, Independent Samples t-Test, One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and the Bonferroni Test were used in data analysis. Results: The mean age of the students was 21.50±2.39, their daily internet use time was 3.85±1.34 hours, 39.5% were sophomores, 70.2% lived in dormitories, 70.5% had a nuclear family, and 65.5% had a moderate income. The mean total score of the participating students was 69.17±20.57 on the SMDS and 36.94±10.47 on the PWS. Statistical test results revealed a weak but significant negative correlation between the total scores of the two scales (r=−0.131; p=0.038). Conclusion: As the participating students' social media addiction levels increased, their psychological well-being levels decreased. Therefore, the development of programs to reduce social media addiction and the support of at-risk groups with low PWS scores are recommended.
