Abstract

Introduction: It is important for students, who are considered a highly vulnerable group in schools against the risk of earthquake disasters, to possess accurate knowledge and appropriate behaviors. Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of animation-supported earthquake education provided to 4th grade primary school students on their attitudes toward earthquakes. Methods: A repeated-measures design consisting of pre-test and post-test was used in the study. The sample consisted of 100 fourth-grade students attending a primary school in Turkey, whose parents provided consent for participation. Data were collected using a personal information form and the “Attitude Scale Toward Earthquakes.” Results: It was found that the “Attitude Scale Toward Earthquakes” score in the first month after the education was statistically significantly higher compared to the scores before the education and on the 15th day after the education (p<0.05). Conclusion: The animation-supported earthquake education improved students' attitudes toward earthquakes. Due to their positive effect on the comprehension of knowledge and long-term memory retention, animations can be used as educational materials in disaster education—such as earthquake training—intended for children.
