Abstract

This study aims to identify the value components of medicinal and aromatic plants, explain how their economic value is determined, and examine the methods used for valuation. It is seen that medicinal and aromatic plants have health and medical, economic, ecological, environmental, tourism, cultural and scientific values, as well as direct use value, indirect use, option, existence and bequest value components. While the economic values of traded medicinal and aromatic plants with direct use value are determined using market prices, option, existence, and bequest values are estimated using methods such as contingent valuation and choice modelling. Cost-based methods can also be used in value estimation. Since economic valuation will contribute to the sustainable management of medicinal and aromatic plants and help ensure the balance between conservation and utilisation, it would be beneficial to encourage valuation studies and to support and disseminate pilot studies on this subject. Integrating the results of economic value determination into the management plans will also help decision makers make the right choice between the options, and to manage the area more effectively and efficiently.
