Abstract

This study examines whether music in utopian and dystopian texts is represented as a secondary aesthetic element or as a social and ontological principle of order. The study first addresses the etymological origins of the concepts of utopia and dystopia along with their historical development from Plato to twentieth-century dystopias and then discusses the correspondence between the ontological meaning of music and the social order promised by utopias. Accordingly, music is examined along four axes: music as a collective practice ensuring social integration, music as a reversible acoustic device oscillating between cosmos and chaos, music as a retrospective form of memory and resistance (anamnesis), and music as an acoustic ontology shaped through the concepts of noise, silence, harmony, and cacophony. The findings show that in utopias, music functions as a symbolic mediator uniting the individual with the self, with nature, and with a transcendent order, whereas in dystopias this integrative function is reversed into a mechanism of chaos that suppresses the individual. These findings suggest that music could be reconsidered as one of the constitutive components of utopian literature.
