Abstract

This study examined the knowledge levels of university students majoring in forestry regarding the sustainable development goals and their perspectives on sustainable forest management. The research was conducted using a descriptive survey model, and data were collected via face-to-face surveys from 255 students enrolled at Artvin Çoruh University during the 2025–2026 academic year. Descriptive statistics, the chi-square test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for data analysis. The findings indicate that students have a high level of awareness regarding the ecological functions of forest ecosystems and environmental issues; however, their knowledge levels regarding the sustainable development goals remain limited. While it was determined that undergraduate students’ knowledge levels were significantly higher than those of associate degree students, no significant difference was found based on gender. The results also show that students attach high importance to the ecological functions of forests; however, they adopt a more cautious approach in their evaluations of sustainable forest management and afforestation practices. As a result, while forestry students demonstrate a strong awareness of sustainability, it is evident that they lack knowledge regarding the sustainable development goals. Accordingly, it is recommended that sustainability-related content be more systematically integrated into educational curricula and that practice-oriented training activities be enhanced.
