Abstract

This study aims to provide an in-depth examination of the adoption of digital marketing tools among tourism SMEs operating in Artvin, a rural and ecotourism-oriented destination, within the framework of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Adopting a qualitative case study design, the study employed purposive sampling, a non-probability sampling technique, and conducted in-depth interviews with eight business managers. The research data were subjected to content analysis, and the findings were analyzed and visualized using MAXQDA qualitative data analysis software. The findings reveal that tourism SMEs in Artvin use social media platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, which offer visual richness and opportunities for direct interaction, more extensively than corporate websites and online travel agencies (OTAs). Among the subdimensions of TAM, external factors and perceived usefulness were found to shape managers’ intentions to adopt these tools, whereas perceived ease of use did not play a decisive role in these intentions. Although managers generally find digital tools easy to use, they do not consider this ease an additional source of motivation. Furthermore, some managers were found to be inclined to deliberately limit their use of digital marketing channels. By providing a holistic understanding of the digital transformation dynamics of tourism SMEs in rural areas, this study contributes to both the literature and regional tourism stakeholders.
