Abstract
Tourism is an important sector that has a multifaceted and positive impact on economic growth. It reduces unemployment rates by providing a wide range of employment opportunities and creates direct employment, especially in areas such as accommodation, food and beverage, transportation and guiding. This leads to economic revitalization at local and national level. In this study, the relationship between tourism revenues and economic growth in Turkey is analyzed by Granger Causality Analysis for the period from the first quarter of 2003 to the last quarter of 2022. The results of the analysis reveal that tourism revenues have a positive impact on economic growth. However, Nonlinear ARDL (NARDL) analysis was also conducted to see whether this effect is symmetric, meaning whether positive and negative changes in tourism revenues affect growth in the same way. The NARDL results showed that the relationship is asymmetric, indicating that increases and decreases in revenues create different impacts on growth. This finding suggests that Turkey should consider tourism not only as a sector that supports economic growth, but also as an area that should be at the center of long-term development strategies. Moreover, the results of the analysis suggest that policy recommendations should be developed to manage the tourism sector more effectively.
