Abstract
The financial reporting process constitutes a multi-layered decision-making environment that requires not only technical knowledge but also intensive cognitive control, ethical judgment, and emotional self-regulation. In this context, accounting professionals are exposed to chronic decision fatigue under conditions where managerial pressures, ethical dilemmas, and time constraints intersect. However, the neurocognitive mechanisms through which these conditions erode the quality of ethical decision-making have not yet been sufficiently addressed within a holistic model framework in the accounting literature. This study aims to fill this gap by explaining the interaction between cognitive load, emotional exhaustion, and ethical deviation based on neurocognitive theories. As a theoretical study focused on conceptual model development without empirical data, the research is designed using an abductive theory-building approach. Within the scope of a systematic literature review conducted using Web of Science, Scopus, and Dergipark databases, findings from neuroscience, accounting ethics, and decision theory were integrated through an interdisciplinary synthesis. The theoretical foundation of the model is based on Kahneman’s dual-process theory, Baumeister’s ego depletion model, Damasio’s somatic marker hypothesis, and Kouchaki and Smith’s time-based ethical deterioration framework. The findings suggest that cognitive load and depletion erode ethical decision quality through a cyclical and self-reinforcing process. This process is conceptualized as the Neurocognitive Ethical Deviation Model (NESM). The model adds a complementary neurocognitive layer to existing behavioral and organizational explanations and provides testable propositions for future empirical research.
Özet
Finansal raporlama süreci, teknik bilginin yanı sıra yoğun bilişsel denetim, etik muhakeme ve duygusal öz düzenleme gerektiren çok katmanlı bir karar ortamı oluşturmaktadır. Muhasebe meslek mensupları, yönetsel baskılar, etik ikilemler ve zaman kısıtlarının kesiştiği koşullar altında kronik bir karar yorgunluğuna maruz kalmakta; ancak bu durumun etik karar kalitesini hangi nörobilişsel mekanizmalar aracılığıyla aşındırdığı muhasebe literatüründe bütüncül bir model çerçevesinde henüz yeterince ele alınmamaktadır. Bu çalışma, söz konusu boşluğu gidermek amacıyla bilişsel yük, duygusal tükenme ve etik sapma arasındaki etkileşimi nörobilişsel kuramlar temelinde açıklamayı amaçlamaktadır. Ampirik veri içermeyen ve kavramsal model geliştirmeye odaklanan bu teorik çalışma, çıkarımsal kuram inşası yaklaşımıyla tasarlanmıştır. Web of Science, Scopus ve Dergipark veri tabanlarında gerçekleştirilen sistematik literatür taraması kapsamında nörobilim, muhasebe etiği ve karar kuramları alanlarından derlenen bulgular disiplinler arası sentez yoluyla bütünleştirilmiştir. Kahneman’ın çift süreçli karar kuramı, Baumeister’in ego tükenmesi modeli, Damasio’nun bedensel işaretleyici hipotezi ve Kouchaki ile Smith’in zaman temelli etik sapma yaklaşımı modelin kuramsal temelini oluşturmaktadır.
